Cervical Stenosis

Dr Al Shamy ClinicCervical stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal, which compresses the spinal cord. It is caused when the discs in the spine dry out as a result of aging. This may cause the space between the vertebrae to shrink.

When this happens, discs between the vertebrae no longer work as well in their role as shock absorbers.

Cervical Stenosis Symptoms

  • Neck or arm pain
  • Numbness and weakness in both hands
  • An unsteady gait when walking
  • Muscle spasms in the legs
  • Loss of coordination

Cervical Stenosis Surgery

Conservative treatments for mild cervical stenosis include medication, bed rest, reduced physical activity, and physical therapy. Severe stenosis often requires evaluation by an expert neurosurgeon, who may suggest surgery for  relief of the symptoms listed above.

Surgical treatment could include:

  • Spinal Fusion
  • Anterior cervical discectomy
  • Anterior cervical corpectomy
  • Posterior cervical laminectomy
